Terrific sounding project… [St-Amand]’s trumpet playing is just that good. It really is a special sound.

ABOUT BLUE SPIRITS

Fronted by trumpeter/vocalist Paul St-Amand, Blue Spirits sounds like an updated spin on Chet Baker, blending cool jazz, bop, blues, funk, and hip hop into a soulful stew. Formed in 2016, the ensemble has been active on the Halifax jazz circuit, collaborating with artists like Andrew Jackson, Silvio Pupo, Zoe Leger, and Carolyn Curry. In addition to skillful interpretations of standards, Blue Spirits performs an exciting set of original jazz music. In addition to Baker, notable influences include Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Gerry Mulligan, Roy Hargrove, Robert Glasper, and Dave Holland.

Blue Spirits is Paul St-Amand (trumpet, flugelhorn & vocals), James Shaw (saxophones), Ross Avey (guitar), Matt MacLennan (electric & upright bass), and Brendan Melchin (drums).

Blue Spirits released their debut album Liquid Courage in June 2017. The album scored a Nova Scotia Music Award nomination for Jazz Recording of the Year.
